How to Use Notepad and CMD to Improve System Performance

While some download and pay for software to automatically increase your system’s speed, there are some simple and free alternatives that can be just as sufficient.

The only programs that you will need are Notepad and CMD, both of which are already installed on your computer for easy access.

One of the simplest and most efficient ways to speed up your computer is to adjust your RAM usage.

RAM usage can be optimized automatically by utilizing software, but sometimes it requires cash out of your pocket. I will show you how to do so manually, and for free, with an in-depth, step-by-step guide:

RAM Optimization

First thing you should do is check how much RAM your computer holds if you don’t know already. You can check by creating the following script:

  • Open your start menu in the bottom left and type in “computer”
  • Next, you should see on the top bar “System properties”
  • Under the “System” section, find where it shows “Installed memory (RAM)”
  • Take note of the amount of RAM that you have installed

Now that you know the amount of RAM installed on your system, we can proceed.

  • Access the start menu again, and type “Notepad” in the search bar
  • When it opens, you’re going to type in the following according to the amount of Installed Memory (RAM)
    • If your Installed Memory (RAM) falls under 1GB, type in: “FreeMem=Space(64000000)”
    • If your RAM is 1GB, type: “FreeMem=Space(102400000) if your RAM is 1GB”
    • 2GB, type in: “FreeMem=Space(204800000)”
    • 4GB, type in: “FreeMem=Space(409600000)”

Basically, you just take “102400000” (yes, that is 5 zeros) and multiply it by the amount of RAM you have installed. Example: You have 16GB installed. 102400000 x 16 = 1638400000.

  • After you have typed it in, proceed to go through File > Save As
  • Name your RAM script anything you’d like, just add “.vbs” at the end.
  • Example: “RAM Boost.vbs
  • And change the bottom dropdown bar, “Save as type:” to “All files”

Now, we have one easy script to optimize our RAM.

Memory Optimization

This next system boosting script is very simple. Don’t worry, there’s no math required.

  1. Open up your Notepad again and type in “mystring=(80000000)
  2. File > Save As > “[Whatever you name it].vbs
  3. Make sure the “Save as type:” bar is set to “All Files”

Now you have two RAM optimizing scripts ready to go!

What Does .vbs Do?

.vbs is an extension that allows you to create files using VBScript, Microsoft scripting language. You are basically creating of a series of commands that help you communicate with your system by creating some code.

The command that we set up in the Notepad essentially uses VBScript to communicate with the Windows Operating System and “unlock” any unused memory in your computer.

When you access the .vbs file to run, it makes your system get rid of the unnecessary RAM that has been used but not yet cleared from previous usage. Now that you have extra memory available, you can use programs more efficiently.

When Should I Use This Command?

This command comes in handy after you’re finished playing a game or using a program that eats up plenty of RAM. It also is very suitable for those who have older systems that don’t have much RAM installed. Essentially, you’re restarting your PC and resetting your RAM allocations without actually shutting off your system.

Utilize the Command Prompt

While Notepad gets many things done, most people devalue the importance of the CMD Prompt, whether they’re unsure of how it works, or it just by intimidation. Do not fear, as we provide a step-by-step process with the commands ready to be copied and pasted for your ease.

Clean Out Temporary Files

While there are numerous ways to clear out your temp folder, doing so in your command prompt is hassle free and only requires a few lines of commands as opposed to navigating through numerous folders. Simply copy and paste the following and you’re good to go:

  • rd /s /q %temp%

mkdir %temp%

rd /s /q c:\windows\temp\

mkdir c:\windows\temp\

  • Press “Enter” after each command line

Easy as pie, right?

Delete Old Windows Update Files

Let’s take it a step further and clear out other junk files such as those ancient Windows update files that are now obsolete. These commands search for extraneous update files and gets rid of them in a snap. All you have to do is type in the following command:

  • net stop wuauserv

ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv

rd /s/q %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution.old

  • Press “Enter” after each command line

Boom! More space and breathing room for your system’s storage.

Disk Error Checkup

Another reason that your computer is slow might be because you have corrupted or damaged files in your directory. If you’re experiencing instances where your computer randomly freezes or unexpectedly shuts down, you may have some corrupted files on your hard drive. You can make sure and perform a diagnostic test, or Disk Error Checkup, by copying and pasting as follows:

  • chkdsk /x /f /r

  • Press “Enter” after each command line

Then, the command prompt should show you if there are any files that are damaged causing problems and sluggish performance in your system.

The Bottom Line

If you’re on a budget and can’t afford to buy software that can boost your performance, you have the option of utilizing the pre-installed programs on your Windows operating system. While most people are intimidated or puzzled by the capabilities of the command prompt, Notepad just proves that system optimization is easily attained by simple programs.

With a few copied and pasted lines of commands, your system will be much quicker and more responsive than ever before.

If you would like to speed up and automate the process of performing any of the commands above, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy of CCleaner Professional. Check out my review of the CCleaner here. With a few clicks of a few buttons, your computer will be squeaky clean and clear of any junk files or programs, thus granting you the necessary speed you need, guaranteed.
